Do I need insurance for a trailer?

A trailer is essentially a motor vehicle and therefore you should take out Comprehensive Motor insurance to cover it.  This will cover any damage to the trailer itself in the event of an accident, and will also cover third party costs in the event of an at-fault claim.

What are the insurance must-haves for bricklayers?

A bricklayer’s primary must-have policy is Public Liability, which covers third party personal injury or damage to property during the course of their manual labouring work.

Bricklayers should also consider insuring their Tools of Trade anywhere in Australia.  A good Tools of Trade policy will include theft from the open air and theft from unattended motor vehicles which is a common occurrence in the construction industry.

Workers Compensation insurance must also be taken out for any bricklayers with employees.  Bricklayers should also include any sole trader subcontractors who work for them, under their Workers Compensation policy, as sole traders are not able to obtain Workers Compensation for themselves.

There's a lot to think about!  For more information, or an obligation free insurance review of your business, contact the knowledgeable and friendly staff at Westralian Insurance on (08) 9302 1388...or visit www.westralianinsurance.com.au

What insurance do tradies need?

Tradies need Public Liability insurance, in order to cover claims for third party property damage and personal injury.  Some Public Liability policies can also be extended to provide Australia-wide cover for Tools of Trade.  Workers Compensation is a legal requirement for any tradies with employees or subcontractors.

Some tradies may also need Builders Warranty if they work on residential construction projects valued at $20,000 or more.  Work vehicles, utes, plant and equipment can also be included on certain policies for tradies, or insured separately.

If you're a tradie and have insurance questions which need answering, we can help!  We'll take the time to review your business requirements, explain the different types of insurance available, and ensure you're fully covered, so you can get on with running your business.

Do I have to cover Sub-Contractors?

It is a legal requirement to have a Workers Compensation policy in place, if you are employing or using Sub-Contractors, unless the Sub-Contractors have their own Workers Compensation policy in place.

A Sole Trader is unable to take out a policy to cover themselves, so any Sole Trader Sub-Contractors will not be able to have their own policy, therefore it is your responsibility to have a policy in place, to cover them whilst they perform work on your behalf.
