 How does Workcover insurance work?

WorkCover insurance, also known as Workers Compensation insurance, is a type of insurance that provides financial protection and support to employees who suffer work-related injuries or illnesses.  It is mandatory in many countries, including Australia, and is designed to cover medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, and lost wages for injured workers. Here are the benefits of Workers Compensation insurance -

  • Financial Protection: Ensures that injured workers receive the necessary financial support during their recovery.
  • Medical and Rehabilitation Support: Provides access to necessary medical treatments and rehabilitation services.
  • Employer Protection: Protects employers from potentially high costs associated with workplace injuries and illnesses, as the insurer handles the compensation and related expenses.

Differences by Region

  • State and Territory Variations: In Australia, the specifics of Workers Compensation insurance, including coverage details, premium rates, and claim processes, can vary by state and territory.  Employers need to be aware of the regulations and requirements specific to their location.

By providing a structured and regulated system for managing work-related injuries and illnesses, Workers Compensation insurance plays a crucial role in protecting both employees and employers from the financial and operational impacts of workplace incidents.

Workers Compensation is a statutory requirement for any business with employees and/or uninsured subcontractors, so if you employ staff and/or uninsured subcontractors, you must take out Workers Compensation cover.

Do I have to cover sub-contractors for Workers Compensation?

In many cases, subcontractors have to be covered for Workers Compensation in exactly the same way as direct employees.  Although some subcontractors may be large businesses with all of their own insurance policies in place, some contractors may be sole traders who are ineligible for Workers Compensation. These types of subcontractors would have to be included on your Workers Compensation policy every year.

What insurance does a builder need?

The most important policy for a builder to carry is Public Liability.  This covers third party property damage and personal injury.

Builders always come into contact with the public and are often on third party property, so Public Liability claims are frequent.

Tools are also important to insure for their full replacement value.  Without their tools, builders are unable to work so covering them (especially against theft) is vitally important.

Workers Compensation is a statutory requirement for builders who employ others.  Many construction companies will not allow builders on-site without adequate Public Liability and Workers Compensation insurance.

Finally, Contract Works is another policy that builders should consider.  It covers a building contract during the construction phase and can include all tools and materials on-site.

There's a lot to consider as a builder and Westralian Insurance can help!  Call us today on (08) 9302 1388 or visit www.westralianinsurance.com.au

What are the insurance must-haves for bricklayers?

A bricklayer’s primary must-have policy is Public Liability, which covers third party personal injury or damage to property during the course of their manual labouring work.

Bricklayers should also consider insuring their Tools of Trade anywhere in Australia.  A good Tools of Trade policy will include theft from the open air and theft from unattended motor vehicles which is a common occurrence in the construction industry.

Workers Compensation insurance must also be taken out for any bricklayers with employees.  Bricklayers should also include any sole trader subcontractors who work for them, under their Workers Compensation policy, as sole traders are not able to obtain Workers Compensation for themselves.

There's a lot to think about!  For more information, or an obligation free insurance review of your business, contact the knowledgeable and friendly staff at Westralian Insurance on (08) 9302 1388...or visit www.westralianinsurance.com.au

Why is Workers Compensation so important?

Workers Compensation is vitally important, first and foremost because it is a legal requirement in Australia.  It’s also very important because it provides protection for your company’s employees in the event of a work-related illness or injury.  The cost of the injured worker’s medical expenses and replacement income does not have to be met by the employer if they have a valid Workers Compensation policy in place.

If you've got employees, it is your legal responsibility to ensure you have Workers Compensation insurance.

A private carer should have Public Liability insurance to cover damage to third party property, or injury to a third party.  Workers Compensation is also a legal requirement for any private carers with employees or subcontractors.

It would also be a good idea to insure the directors or principals for their own work-related injuries or illnesses.  This can be done via Workers Compensation as a working director, or Income Protection/Personal Accident if the business is set up as a sole trader or partnership.

Understanding which insurance cover you need can be confusing, so talk to the friendly professionals today.  Call the team at Westralian Insurance on (08) 9302 1388, or visit www.westralianinsurance.com.au

What insurance do I need for my plumbing business?

Most importantly, you will need a Public and Products Liability policy to cover your activities as a Plumber.  You will find that most policies have a limitation on underground services claims – this means that you need to dial before you dig and check the location of underground pipes and cables before carrying out any excavation work.  If you don’t check prior to commencing works, you may find that a subsequent claim will be declined.

Secondly, you want to ensure that you have coverage for your tools.  A good insurance policy should cover your tools for Fire, Damage in a collision and Theft from a locked vehicle or premise.  It is also possible to have the Theft cover extended to include Theft in the Open Air if you wish.

If you engage any employees or subcontractors, there is a requirement by law to cover them for Workers Compensation.

Income Protection or Personal Accident and Illness cover is also recommended.

For more information, call Westralian Insurance on (08) 9302 1388 or visit www.westralianinsurance.com.au

What insurance do tradies need?

Tradies need Public Liability insurance, in order to cover claims for third party property damage and personal injury.  Some Public Liability policies can also be extended to provide Australia-wide cover for Tools of Trade.  Workers Compensation is a legal requirement for any tradies with employees or subcontractors.

Some tradies may also need Builders Warranty if they work on residential construction projects valued at $20,000 or more.  Work vehicles, utes, plant and equipment can also be included on certain policies for tradies, or insured separately.

If you're a tradie and have insurance questions which need answering, we can help!  We'll take the time to review your business requirements, explain the different types of insurance available, and ensure you're fully covered, so you can get on with running your business.

Do I need insurance for my business?

If your business employs anyone, then Workers Compensation insurance is a legal requirement.  This covers replacement wages and medical expenses for an injured worker, in the event of a work-related injury or illness.

Public Liability is also very important for businesses in order to cover claims for third party property damage or personal injury.  An injury or property damage allegation by a third party could be disastrous for a business that’s trading without Public Liability insurance.

The physical assets of the business should also be insured under a Business Package policy which can cover contents, stock, theft, glass, machinery breakdown and business interruption amongst others.

Westralian Insurance is here to help, with fully qualified, professional and friendly staff, alongside a vast knowledge of the West Australian market.
